What should I wear on an Iceland tour?
Quick answer
Dress in warm layers with a waterproof, windproof outer jacket and sturdy waterproof shoes — Iceland's weather changes fast in every season. Summer day tours are usually 10–15°C and winter tours around 0°C or below, and it's often windy and wet near waterfalls, so a hat, gloves and a warm base layer are worth packing year-round.
The three-layer system
- Base layer — a warm, moisture-wicking top and leggings (wool or synthetic, not cotton).
- Mid layer — a fleece or light down jacket for insulation.
- Outer shell — a waterproof and windproof jacket, plus waterproof trousers in winter or near waterfalls.
Footwear
Wear sturdy, waterproof shoes or boots with good grip — paths can be wet, muddy, icy or rocky. Bring warm wool socks.
Summer vs winter
- Summer (Jun–Aug): roughly 10–15°C, long daylight, but wind and rain are common. Layers still matter.
- Winter (Nov–Mar): around 0°C or below, short daylight, ice and snow — add a hat, gloves, a scarf and thermal layers.
Don't forget
A hat and gloves year-round, a swimsuit and towel for the Blue Lagoon or hot springs, sunglasses, and a camera. Our vehicles are warm and comfortable, so you only need to bundle up for the stops.
